L-arginine is a chemical building block called "an amino acid." It is obtained from the diet and is necessary for the body to make proteins. L-arginine is found in red meat, poultry, fish, and ...
In the body, L-arginine converts to the regulatory compound nitric oxide, which may help lower blood pressure by relaxing and opening blood vessels. The Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database has reported that some evidence does show that taking L-arginine can slightly lower blood pressure in healthy people and in those with type 2 diabetes and mild hypertension .
It may also cause hypotension and hyperkalemia, or increased levels of potassium in the blood. For those who suffer from heart disease, using L-arginine may cause an increased white blood cell count, lack of energy and strength, vertigo, increased blood pressure and post-heart-attack deaths.
L-arginine and L-citrulline are amino acids. Citrulline is a precursor to the synthesis of arginine. According to Mayo Clinic, the body changes arginine into nitric oxide, which helps blood vessels dilate, thus reducing blood pressure. By taking arginine and citrulline supplements, it may be possible for some people to lower their blood pressure.
Supplementation with l-arginine reduces diastolic blood pressure and lengthens pregnancy for women with gestational hypertension, including women with high blood pressure as part of pre-eclampsia. It did not lower systolic blood pressure or improve weight at birth .
In a few small studies, L-arginine has been shown to benefit men with erectile dysfunction.29,30 Most L-arginine studies to date have used high daily doses, due to the pharmacokinetics of oral L-arginine, which reaches its highest concentration in the blood within an hour, then tapers off quickly.31 A sustained-release L-arginine product
